History of Ukulele

The ukulele was first introduced to Hawaii by Portuguese immigrants who came to work in the sugar cane fields. Instrument maker, Manuel Nunes, along with Joao Fernandes and Augustine Dias created the ukulele in 1879 using the basic instrument designs of Portuguese.

Hawaiians were so impressed with its beautiful sounds and the speed of the musicians' fingers, that they called this instrument the ukulele, which means "Jumping Fleas". Ukulele became Hawaii's most popular musical instrument.

Master craftsman, Peter Hurney, creates artistic and beautiful ukuleles. All his ukuleles are unique, high quality instruments, and enjoyed by prominent musicians worldwide. For more information, visit his website at Pohaku Ukuleles.
